Stage 1

In light of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, and in recognition of the unprecedented challenges facing school students and teaching staff, the due date for Stage 1 applications to commence undergraduate study at ANU on a Tuckwell Scholarship in 2021 has been extended to 3:00PM AEST, May 25, 2020. Late applications will not be accepted.

We will continue to monitor the (COVID-19) situation and may introduce additional changes to this year's Tuckwell Scholarship application process in response to directives from the relevant authorities. We will advise applicants of any changes that are made to the application process or timelines via email and our website.

Stage 1 has two sequential components, each with its own closing date:

  1. The applicant submits a detailed online application, nominates their Teacher Referee and Head of Year Referee and provides contact details for their Principal Referee before 3PM AEDT, May 25, 2020.
  2. After the application is submitted, the Teacher Referee and Head of Year Referee submit detailed references before 3PM AEST, June 1, 2020.

Application outcomes will be shared via email, with shortlisted applicants progressing to Stage 2.

A Short How To - Applicants

  1. Discuss your interest, suitability and eligibility for the Scholarship with a teacher, principal, Head of Year or careers counsellor
  2. Read the Application Guide and ensure that you will be able to access and provide the required information
  3. Register on the ANU Direct Application system and select that you wish to apply for a Tuckwell Scholarship. You will then receive an email from the Tuckwell Scholarship application system that provides access to the Stage 1 Application Form.
  4. Complete the Stage 1 Application Form before the deadline by:
    • Providing personal details, education history and information about your extra-curricular activities and community engagement;
    • Answering several short response questions; and
    • Nominating both a Teacher Referee and Head of Year Referee (they can be the same person) who will provide more information about you before the deadline
      • Your Teacher Referee needs to be a staff member at your school who has known you for at least 12 months and can explain your suitability for the Scholarship
      • Your Head of Year Referee needs to be a staff member at your school who is able to provide information regarding your academic performance compared to your cohort and your predicted ATAR. Please ask your school who the most appropriate person to provide this reference would be - a Head of Year (or equivalent) is ideal
    • Providing contact details for their Principal Referee, who will be required to submit a detail reference if you are shortlisted to progress to Stage 2
      • Your Principal Referee should be your school principal, or if they are unavailable, another senior member of staff from your school

  5. Check with your Teacher and Head of Year Referees to ensure that they have submitted their references before the deadline

General Advice

You may complete Stage 1 in multiple sessions, by saving your responses and logging on and off the portal as desired.

We strongly recommend that applicants write their answers in a Word document first then insert them to the Stage 1 Application Form. This will reduce the likelihood of losing in-progress answers and help to avoid grammatical or spelling errors.

Please proofread the application carefully prior to submission, as changes cannot be made after submission.

The applicant is responsible for their Teacher Reference and Head of Year Reference being submitted before the deadline.

The Teacher and Head of Year Referees will not be able to access the system to complete their reference until the applicant has submitted their Stage 1 Application Form. As there are only a few days between the deadline for applicants and the deadline for references, we encourage applicants to submit their application as early as possible in order to give their referees ample time.

Applicants will not see the Teacher, Head of Year or Principal Referee submissions. If the applicant progresses to Stage 2, the Principal Referee will see the Teacher and Head of Year Referee submissions.

We do not to provide individual feedback on applications.

All Stage 1 candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application by email.
