Tuckwell Scholarship Program announces new Selection Panel Chair

Welcome Emeritus Professor Royston Gustavson
3 July 2026

Emeritus Professor Royston Gustavson has officially joined the Tuckwell Scholarship Program as Selection Panel Chair.

The Tuckwell Selection Panel is responsible for selecting a cohort of 25 new Tuckwell Scholars each year after a thorough application process, including face to face interviews with selection panel members on campus during selection weekend. Emeritus Professor Gustavson will commence his duties as Chair shortly, during the upcoming Tuckwell Selection Weekend, July 10-12.

The Selection Panel Chair also helps the Bell Ringer, ring in the new cohort at Tuckwell Commencement each year, announcing the 25 scholar names as they cross the stage.

Royston Gustavson is Emeritus Professor in the Centre for Social Policy Research at ANU. After joining the university in 2003, he served as Associate Dean (Education) of the College of Business and Economics (2010-2011), then of the College of Arts and Social Sciences (2012-2019) where he was simultaneously Deputy Dean (2017-2019). In 2019, he moved to Chancelry, initially as interim Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), and then as the university’s inaugural Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic Quality) until his retirement in early 2026. He continues to be an active member of the ANU community.

Royston is currently interim Chair of the ACT Board of Senior Secondary Studies, of which he has been a member since 2015, and Vice-President of the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE (formerly the Higher Education Academy).

The Tuckwell Scholarship Program would like to acknowledge outgoing Selection Panel Chair, Professor Anthony Connolly, Dean of the ANU College of Law, Governance and Policy, for his years of service. Professor Connolly has played an important role in the program’s history between 2023 and 2026, and his time, dedication and unique style in announcing new cohorts at Commencement will be greatly missed.
