Two Tuckwell Alumni, who are also constitutional lawyers from Australian Government Solicitor (AGS) visited Scholars House to share their experiences. Jye Beardow (2017) and Jonathan Tjandra (2015) were part of our “Beyond Graduation an Occasional Tuckwell Alumni Speaker Series.” They answered questions from current scholars and provided some excellent advice about their field of law and also about life at university and preparing for work.

Both Jye and Jonathan are Ramsay scholarship recipients and studied a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University.

Jye graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce.

Since graduating from ANU, Jye has built a career in constitutional law. He is currently a lawyer in the Australian Government Solicitor’s Constitutional Litigation Unit in Canberra, having previously served as an Associate to the Hon Justice Steward at the High Court of Australia and the Hon Justice Bond at the Court of Appeal of Queensland. He was admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of the ACT before commencing his postgraduate studies.

In 2024, Jye was awarded a Ramsay Postgraduate Scholarship to undertake a Bachelor of Civil Law at the University of Oxford. He graduated from Oxford in July 2026 with Distinction, having studied Advanced Administrative Law, Constitutional Theory, Principles of Civil Procedure and Business Taxation in a Global Economy.

Originally from Lismore, NSW, Jye continues to pursue his interests in constitutional and public law through his work as a constitutional lawyer in Canberra.

Jonathan is from Perth and is now a lawyer working in Canberra as Counsel at the Australian Government Solicitor, advising on constitutional and public law. Jonathan graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (Hons) and a Juris Doctor from ANU. After graduating, he worked as a Legal Research Officer to Chief Justice Kiefel AC, Chief Justice of Australia.
