2019 Scholars Announced following Tuckwell Interview Weekend
This year's Interview Weekend brought 75 shortlisted candidates to Canberra to have interviews with the Tuckwell Selection Panel. In 2018, 682 applications were received in Stage 1 (March). 188 applicants were invited to progress to Stage 2, from which 75 applicants were invited to attend the weekend held 7-9 July.
While in Canberra, candidates not only participated in interviews, but also engaged in a range of other activities designed to showcase the ANU and Canberra; and assist candidates to relax during a potentially stressful weekend. These included a bus tour of Canberra, campus tours, residence tours, social sports, and walking groups to the botanical gardens and National Museum of Australia. Many candidates also took advantage of a "Chill Out Space" where they could get to know each other and current scholars over a cuppa - and/or try their hand at origami!
On the Monday following the interview weekend, the Panel determined which 25 applicants will be offered a Tuckwell Scholarship and candidates were called the same afternoon to inform them of the outcome.
The cohort for 2019 bring a diversity of skills and backgrounds. There is an aspiring astronomer with a passion for mixed martial arts; an AFL player who balances her commitments as school captain with her local youth orchestra and swimming club; and a student who will have visited Tehran to participate in the International Biology Olympiad before even getting to ANU!
Those candidates who did not receive an offer of a Tuckwell Scholarship who progressed to Stage 3 have all been offered scholarships by the University and it is our hope that we will see them at ANU in 2019!
