Tuckwell Scholar Martha Reece (2019) recognised with the TH Laby Medal
The prestigious TH Laby Medal is awarded annually for the best Honours or Masters thesis from an Australian University.
Tuckwell Scholar Martha Reece (2019) has been recognised with the TH Laby Medal from the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) for achieving outstanding results in her research theses at ANU.
Martha will receive the award in recognition of her honours thesis: ‘Challenging nuclear vibrations with particle-gamma spectroscopy’. Martha's research in nuclear physics has enhanced our ability to study how groups of atoms behave when they're excited by electrical forces. In her study, she found that tellurium-124, a specific type of atom, doesn't act the way we predicted based on a common model we use to understand how atoms work together. This discovery challenges our previous ideas about how atomic nuclei behave.
The award consists of a medal, certificate and monetary prize of $1000, and one year membership of the AIP.
We celebrate Martha's incredible success and look forward to seeing her continue to make a profound impact in her field.
Congratulations Martha!
