Oscar Waring, 2024 Tuckwell Scholar, awarded ANU Ethel Tory Language Scholarship

22 November 2024

We are very pleased to share that 2024 Scholar, Oscar Waring has been awarded an ANU Ethel Tory Language Scholarship.

Oscar is from Belmont, Victoria and has just finished his first year at ANU, studying a double degree in arts and PhB science.

Each year the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences and the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific may offer up to 30 awards known as the Ethel Tory Language Scholarship with the aim to provide funds to cover documented travel costs, for eligible students undertaking full‐time language study outside Australia, or full‐time language study of Australian Indigenous Languages within Australia. Funding for this award has been provided by the Ethel Tory Endowment fund.

Oscar will use this scholarship for a Japanese language course at Akita International University in Japan. The program is during the snowy winter of northern Japan, and includes small group language classes, field trips and helping the Shiraiwa local community set up with their annual winter festival.

The Japanese Language and Cultural Immersion Program: Advanced (J-CIP:A) is a six-week, six-credit, intensive course in Akita, with studies taught entirely in Japanese during the Japanese winter, established by AIU in cooperation with The Australian National University.
