Six Tuckwell Alumni return to ANU for the annual Tuckwell Network event

17 May 2024

This week we welcomed six Alumni as guests on our panel at the Tuckwell Network event:
Jeevan Haikerwal (2015), Hannah Harmelin (2014), Damian Mazur (2016), Sarah Marshall (2014), Maddison Perkins (2015), and Tamara Bohler (2015).

This annual event provides a networking opportunity for current Tuckwell Scholars and Alumni to share their experiences, and break into academic and professional network groups and continue planning opportunities to connect after the event.

A wide range of careers and experiences from the law, medicine, government, not for profit, consulting, international relations, politics, and creative industries were represented, and our Alumni answered questions from the group on a range of topics.

One recurring theme was the importance of staying true to oneself and not succumbing to external pressures. They emphasised that it's perfectly fine not to have your entire career mapped out right now. Instead, they encouraged Scholars to explore their passions and carve their own unique paths, even if it meant diverging from the expected trajectory.

Another key takeaway was the significance of people and relationships. The panel stressed the importance of surrounding yourself with individuals who inspire and support, both personally and professionally.

The panel highlighted that unlike university, where individual achievements often take centre stage, the workforce operates within an ecosystem where collaboration and teamwork are paramount. They noted that finding different motivations beyond grades and short-term goals such as getting through the semester or topping the year in a subject, was a challenge that required them to think differently.

Another important message was the value of giving yourself permission to pause and reflect. Rushing into decisions simply because it seems like the right thing to do or because others are doing it can lead to missed opportunities and dissatisfaction. They noted that trusting your instincts and allowing yourself the space to grow and evolve at your own pace was essential.

The panellists also touched on the importance of embracing vulnerability and seeking help when needed. They encouraged scholars to ask questions, raise concerns, and be open to learning from others. Additionally, they reminded us that both success and challenges are temporary and that every experience holds the potential for growth and opportunity.

Thank you to our amazing Tuckwell community of Alumni, Scholars and staff for coming together and making this year’s Network Event a great success.
